The Northern Michigan Wildcat hockey team downed the UP rival Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday night, 2-0. The win gives the ‘Cats a 2-0-1 record against Tech this season and gives possession of the Ramada Cup to NMU for another year. (more…)
Matt Siddall - and a few Wildcat fans - may remember a Thursday night nearly three years ago when the Michigan Tech Huskies tied, 3-3, with the host Wildcats. That night, in the final minute of overtime, the game broke down into a heated brawl. In total, 191 penalty minutes were handed out that evening, with 16 of them going to Siddall for his involvement in the game-ending fight.
As the old saying goes, history tends to repeat itself and on Friday night in Marquette, it certainly did. (more…)
After a hectic Thanksgiving break, I feel too detached from NMU hockey. Apologies are in order.
Last weekend, the Wildcats managed to sweep the LSSU Lakers in a home-and-home series, 4-2 and 3-1. Big games came in from freshman forward Mark Olver, who had two goals and four points on the weekend, and freshman netminder Reid Ellingson. (more…)
After a 4-2 loss on Friday night, the Wildcats bounced back on Saturday, downing the Bowling Green Falcons 3-2.
Whitmore’s Friday
When I talked to NMU head coach Walt Kyle last Tuesday, we talked about how good Bowling Green forward Derek Whitmore really was.
I thought that Whitmore was leading a resurrection of an eternally-shoddy Falcon team.
Kyle felt that Whitmore was a pretty good player surrounded by other pretty good players. (more…)
The Northern Michigan Wildcat hockey team won its first conference game of the year in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, topping the Western Michigan Broncos, 4-3, in overtime.
After the two teams skated off the majority of the overtime period, the Wildcats had the puck behind their own cage and headed down-ice with 20 seconds remaining.
Sophomore forward Matt Butcher took the puck across the blue line and fought through a crowd in the offensive zone before flipping the game-winning goal past Bronco netminder Riley Gill with just 3.3 seconds remaining in the overtime period.
Butcher’s goal was the first of his career. (more…)
On Friday night, the Northern Michigan Wildcat hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the visiting Western Michigan Broncos.
“They beat tonight. They gave it to us,” NMU head coach Walt Kyle said. “I thought we did a lot of things really well and had a lot of horrible breakdowns.” (more…)
The Miami RedHawks showed once more why they are the No. 1 team in the country on Saturday in Marquette.
A night after embarassing Northern Michigan 9-2, Miami fought back from a 2-0 deficit and left Marquette with a 3-2 victory and a series sweep over the Wildcats.
“They’re the No. 1 team in the country and they definitely showed it Friday and Saturday, in two different ways,” NMU forward Matt Siddall said. “They are an exceptional team and they’re going to be one of the best teams in the country all year long.” (more…)
In Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon, the Northern Michigan Wildcat football team downed the Gannon Knights 27-23 to win their third straight game.
Travis Holmes knocked down Bob Bartley’s fourth-down pass to the endzone with 13 seconds remaining and the Knights (0-10 overall, 0-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) remained winless.
The Wildcats (4-5, 4-5), on the other hand, have been heading in the right direction as of late. (more…)
Just two nights after Halloween, the No. 1 Miami RedHawks lit up the Northern Michigan Wildcats like a jack-o’-lantern in the Berry Events Center on Friday.
Most of the torching was done by senior Miami forward Ryan Jones, who picked up four goals and an assist during the RedHawks’ 9-2 drubbing of the ‘Cats.
“They were good, we were bad. I mean, we were brutal tonight,” NMU head coach Walt Kyle said. “It was brutal execution and tons of stupid mistakes.” (more…)
Buddy Rivera’s final series in the Superior Dome couldn’t have gone any better. On first down, the senior quarterback took a knee. The next play was a meaningless rush that killed the clock and locked up a 45-31 Senior Day victory for the Northern Michigan Wildcats. (more…)
